In the meantime, I thought I’d give you an idea of what I’ve been up to this year and the places that I’ve visited.
Prague has to be one of the most beautiful cities I’ve visited, with its winding cobbled streets and narrow canals, all leading through a city rich in culture and history.
When we first landed in Prague Airport, we took a local bus to the city centre where we were able to get our underground connection to our hotel. We stayed a little bit out of the centre, in a northern district called Kobylisy which was easily accessible by both the underground and the tram. We arrived at our hotel around 8.30pm and decided to venture out around Kobylisy for a drink after a busy day. We stumbled across a small bar, where the beer was served from a hut and live music was playing on a Monday evening. We ended up at this bar a couple of times during the week as the people were lovely and the beer was cheap! – (£2.49 for a pint of lager and a 250ml glass of white wine).
The following day, we visited Charles Bridge and Prague Castle, the latter being located at the top of a steep hill leading to a beautiful view of the whole of Prague. On the way to Prague Castle, we passed through the Lesser Town which was dotted with many antique shops, cars and bustling tourists. On our final night, we also took a boat cruise on the Vltava River, which brought us through the small canals, under the Charles Bridge and explored the history of Prague.
The day before we were due to leave, we caught a train from the main station and headed 45 minutes outside of Prague to visit Karlstejn Castle, the largest Gothic castle in the Czech Republic. The rain that had persisted through the morning didn’t put us off climbing to the castle grounds, although we did stop off for coffee on the way so we weren’t soaked through. The castle grounds were spectacular, and the view of the surrounding countryside could be seen from the battlements.
On our final night, we wandered into the Old Town Square where St. Nicholas Cathedral was lit up in all its glory. We decided to walk back over to the Lesser Town via Charles Bridge and came across the John Lennon Wall up a side street. It is a fascinating piece of art, with visitors from all over the globe leaving their mark on it.
After leaving here, we happened upon a French street market, serving everything from fruity wine to escargots. We decided to buy a bottle of wine and a couple of croissants and perched ourselves on the outskirts of the market, people watching and admiring all the different cultures as they got steadily more drunk. On our return to the Old Town, a flash mob had started just beyond Charles Bridge, with the locals involving all the tourists there in their act.
Prague is definitely a city I would be happy to return to; 5 days just wasn’t enough to explore its beauty. However, after travelling along the canals and seeing the little boats, I think Venice or Vienna may be on the cards after Nepal!
Ahoj!
